We visited one of Grace
O'Malley's many castles which provided protection for Ireland's "Pirate
Queen." This is one of the small castles used for defense. There was
a large main castle which was the main residence.
Grace (Gaelic name: Granuaile) was quite a gal since she not only was
a pirate she also had many ships which were used for bringing goods into
Ireland. One of her children was born on the deck of a ship during a battle.
After she gave birth she got up and joined her men in the fight.
And what did Suzanne do while most of the others climbed to the top of
the castle?
She beaded, of course! |
